Synopsis: From the PREFACE: Exploring Music, fourth edition, is designed for introductory music courses at the college level. The book is structured to suit a variety of course lengths. Coverage is comprehensive enough for a full-year course. At the same time the organization of the text affords considerable flexibility so that instructors in a one- or two-quarter course can use the book selectively to fit the length of time at her or his disposal.
The goal of Exploring Music is to help the student acquire informed listening skills which promote the development of a curiosity about, an enthusiasm for, and the enjoyment of many types and styles of music. In its organization and contents, the fourth edition is calculated to enhance the pursuit of this goal.
ORGANIZATION
Part I presents the fundamental elements of music in three easy-to-read chapters. Simple musical examples as well as brief excerpts from musical works covered later in the text are used to illustrate and reinforce concepts. The basic vocabulary necessary for understanding and discussing music is included in these chapters. Part I concludes with a chapter on musical instruments, including the human voice, and explores combinations of instruments in small and large musical ensembles. Part II introduces the music of non-Western cultures, offering the student a global perspective on music before moving to an examination of music in Western society in the remainder of the book. Then, using the material of part I as a foundation, parts III through IX examine in chronological order the periods of music history from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Part X focuses on jazz and rock music.
"Preludes," accompanied by full color plates as well as black and white photographs, present historical, philosophical, and artistic background of each major style period. Particular emphasis is given to painting, sculpture, and architecture....
